Efraim P. Armendariz

It is with great sadness that the department announces the passing of
Professor Efraim Armendariz. Efraim died on Wednesday 13th February after
a battle with cancer. Efraim had been with the department since 1966
and was Chairman from 1991--2007. Under his leadership the department's
stature rose nationally and internationally.
In his time in the department, Efraim was
heavily involved in programs to enrich the mathematics experience
for undergraduates at UT, as well as programs that impacted mathematics
education state wide. For example,
Efraim was instrumental in establishing the
Emerging Scholars Program at the University of Texas,
and he was an active supporter and participant of the UTeach program.
He will be sorely missed by his colleagues in the department,
and in the larger University community.
A celebration of Efraim's life will be held on Saturday, February 23,
10am at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Dr. Austin, TX

Ted Odell

It is with great sadness that the department announces the passing
of Professor Ted Odell who died suddenly on January 9th 2013.
Ted had been with
the Department of Mathematics since 1977, and since 2005 held the
John T. Stuart III Centennial Professorship of Mathematics.
He was also the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies.
On Saturday January 19th, an event, "The Celebration of The Life of Ted Odell"
was held in Room MAI 212 of the Main Building of the U.T. campus. Speeches
to a packed room were given by a family member,
colleagues in the department and two of Ted's co-authors. It was
also announced that Ted's family has generously started a
"The Ted Odell Excellence Fund in Mathematics."
His death leaves a huge void in the department, and he will be sorely
missed by his colleagues there and in the
larger University community.

Jane Arledge to receive President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award

Dr. Jane Arledge has been selected to receive the President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award for the 2011-2012
academic year.
The award recognizes the consistent level of excellence Dr. Arledge has achieved in teaching
undergraduate students.

The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes members who have made
outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization

UT Math has been awarded a RTG Grant in Geometry and Topology
Sept 4 , 2012
Thirteen faculty members in Geometry/Topology has been awarded a new, highly competitive, RTG
grant from the NSF. Over a five year span, this award will provide $2.5M
to enhance the training of undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers in
Geometry and Topology.

Uhlenbeck received an honorary degree from Princeton University
July 2 , 2012
Karen Uhlenbeck received an honorary doctorate of science from Princeton University during
their spring commencement ceremonies. The honor recognized her leadership in mathematical physics
and partial differential equations, particularly gauge theory and global analysis; and for her
invaluable achievements in mentoring young mathematicians.

Luis Caffarelli received an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Notre Dame during
their spring commencement ceremonies. The honor recognized his leadership in the field of partial

Caffarelli Wins Israel's Wolf Prize

Luis Caffarelli has been named a winner of Israel's prestigious Wolf
Prize, along with seven other American, British and Isreli recipients.
The Math Department now has two Wolf prize winners on its faculty,
John Tate won the Wolf prize in 2002.

Engquist Receives 2012 AMS-SIAM Birkhoff Prize

Bjorn Engquist has been awarded the 2012 AMS-SIAM George David Birkhoff Prize in Applied
Mathematics, "for his contributions to a wide range of powerful computational methods over
more than three decades," the prize citation says. "His work blends mathematical analysis, modeling,
and computation, and has led to numerical tools with enormous impact across a broad range of
applications, including aerodynamics, acoustics, electromagnetism, computational fluid mechanics,
and computational geoscience."

Babuska Receives 2012 AMS Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement

Ivo M. Babuska has been awarded the 2012 AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement,
"for his many pioneering advances in the numerical solution of partial differential equations over
the last half century." The prize citation goes on to say: "In his work on finite element methods,
Babuska has developed and applied mathematics in profound ways to develop, analyze, and validate
algorithms which are crucial for computational science and engineering. In so doing, he has helped
to define that field, and has had a great impact on the modern world. A constant characteristic of
Babuska's work is the combination of deep and imaginative mathematical analysis with a constant
concern for the practical implications of his work for engineering applications."
