Jr Geometry Higgs bundles

  Higgs bundles can be viewed as certain reductions of flat bundles. The moduli space of Higgs bundles enjoys many geometric properties: it has a hyperKahler structure; moreover, it is an integrable system called the Hitchin system. I will describe the fibers of the Hitchin's Hamiltonians in the cases when and . Time permitting, I will explain how to understand the hyperKahler structure from the point of view of nonabelian Hodge theory.

Who is in GRG?

  • The faculty in GRG have interests which cover a wide range of topics including: algebraic geometry, combinatorial geometry, geometric PDE, gauge theory, integrable systems, mathematical physics, mathematical biology, representation theory, tilings
  • Post-docs (instructors and lecturers) help to diversify GRG with their varied interests, and they have much to gain by participating in GRG activities.
  • Graduate students play an important role in the activities of GRG, pursuing their research and frequently giving seminar lectures.

    Geometry Seminars

    There are currently five geometry related seminars:
  • GADGET lunch seminar on Tuesdays,
  • Junior Geometry Seminar on Tuesdays
  • Geometry and String Theory Seminar on Wednesdays
  • Geometry Seminar on Thursdays and
  • GRASP

    GADGET is an informal lunch seminar which meets as the need arises (conference reports, expository talks, practice talks, etc.) and is a frequent venue for talks by graduate students. The Junior Geometry seminar is run by graduate students interested in geometry of all kinds. The Geometry and String Theory is a joint seminar between the Geometry group in the Math Dept and the Theory Group in the Physics Dept. The Thursday Geometry seminar now includes algebraic geometry. It meets every week at 3:30 for two hours, with a break in the middle. We ask speakers to give a general exposition in the first hour so as not to accelerate too quickly, and to give technical details in the second hour. Finally GRASP (= Geometry Representation Theory and Some Physics) is an introductory lecture series to representation theory run by David Ben-Zvi.

    Whom does GRG interact with?

  • There are several people with related interests with whom members of GRG communicate, both within the mathematics department and in other departments.
  • The Theory Group in the Physics Department
  • The mathematical physics group overlaps with GRG quite a bit.
  • The partial differential equations group has some interest in geometric PDE and similar problems.
  • The Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (TICAM).

    Funding of GRG

    The GRG group is funded by a group NSF grant, several individual research grants, endowment funds from the Sid Richardson Regents' Chair Number 3 and university resources. Funds are available through GRG for the Saturday Morning Math Group, undergradaute research and travel, graduate student and post doc support and travel, and short term visitors. These resources are primarily used for members of the group and their students, coworkers and visitors. In particular GRG has its own library of books related to the research of its members.
