Course Description:

This is the first semester of the core course in algebraic topology.  We discuss homotopy equivalence of topological spaces, topological manifolds, fundamental group and covering spaces, homology theory, classification of 2-manifolds, and if time permits some cohomology theory.  Geometric applications of these algebraic tools will be emphasized.  The text for the course is Hatcher's "Algebraic Topology.”
