Course Grade:

Your course grade (using +/-) will be determined on the basis of

(1) HOMEWORK: (10%)

Homework will be assigned regularly via the Web using the UT Homework Service, QUEST; all answers and grades will be returned via the Web also using Quest. There will be fifteen assignments. The three lowest homework scores will be dropped. No late HW will be accepted. Additional practice problems may be found in the text.  HW01 is a "calculus assessment" - precalculus problems administered via Quest by the College of Natural Sciences. It is supposed to appear at 5pm on Jan.19 and is due 5pm on Jan. 23. Students entering the course late can take the makeup assessment between Feb.2 and Feb.6.

(2) TESTS: (60%)

Three tests will be held during the EVENING from 7:00-9:00 pm in rooms indicated in the chart on the following dates. Exams are cummulative.

Please note the following:

  • Each test will count 20% of the course grade and will consist of at most 20 multiple choice questions taken from the same data bank of questions as the homework.
  • Tests will NOT be held in the scheduled classroom for lectures. The location of tests are listed above.
  • There are NO negative points on tests - it pays to guess.
  • No calculators allowed at tests

(3) FINAL EXAM: (30%)

Final exam will be Thursday, May 10, 2012, 7-10pm. No alternate final exams are given except for the scheduled makeup final. No early finals are given for any reason. Do not make plans to be away from UT during the final exam period.

If the uniform final conflicts with another final, you must send your name, UTEID and your final exam schedule to your instructor by May 4. Your instructor will determine if you may take the makeup final exam. If you have 3 finals scheduled on 5/10, you may request to take the makeup final.

Important General Information:

1. If a student is absent from a test and wishes to be given a make-up test, then he or she must formally request this within 48 HOURS of the test missed. The request, which must be supported by a properly documented excuse, must be presented to the student's instructor. If you are the least bit uncertain as to the validity of an excuse based on some previously scheduled, upcoming event, then seek approval for a make-up before the exam in question, not after the fact.

2. To succeed in M408K students need to develop good study habits and to seek assistance whenever and wherever it is provided. Students are particularly encouraged to attend discussion groups regularly and to seek help from the Teaching Assistant for the section for which they are registered.

3. Additional help is available at the Sanger Learning and Career Center (SLCC) in Jester A115.

The Sanger Center offers early-semester classes to support students' preparation for M408K:

Algebra Refresher – MTW (1/23 – 1/25) – (6:00 - 7:30)

Trigonometry Refresher – MTW (1/30 – 2/1) – (6:00 - 7:30)

Each class is a 3-day series (covering unique information each day).  All classes are free for currently enrolled UT students.

The Sanger Center also offers three forms of tutoring to students throughout the semester:

Drop-In Tutoring – A free, walk-in study environment supported by our mathematics tutors

Appointment Tutoring – Individualized one-hour meetings with one of our mathematics tutors

Small Group Tutoring – Arranged group study for students enrolled in a common class, supported by our mathematics tutors

A further description of the Sanger Learning and Career Center services can be found here: http://lifelearning.utexas.edu/

Students may enroll in refresher classes and register for tutoring support by going

directly to the Student Login portion of the website.

4.  Residential Hall Study Groups
Sunday - Thursday evenings.

http://cns.utexas.edu/community/resident-hall-study-groups
Jester Dormitory (Jester City Limits, 1st floor, 7:30-10:30 pm)
Kinsolving Dormitory (KIN dining entry area, 7:30-10:30 pm)
The College of Natural Sciences has created the RHSG for M408K, M408L as well as CH301and Bio311C, to encourage group study and independent thinking. RHSG will be staffed by teaching assistants and undergraduates.

5.  Students who fall under the University's Learning Disability Policy must present certification of that fact to the student's instructor prior to the first test.  The University of Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. For more information and certification letter, contact theDivision of Diversity and Community Engagement, Services for Students with Disabilities: http://www.utexas.edu/diversity/ddce/ssd/,  471- 6259, 471-6441 TTY.

6. Calculators may be used on the homework but may NOT be used on any tests.

7.  QUEST INSTRUCTIONAL CHARGE  This course makes use of the web-based Quest content delivery and homework server system maintained by the College of Natural Sciences. This homework service will require a $22 charge per student for its use, which goes toward the maintenance and operation of the resource.  Please go to http://quest.cns.utexas.edu to log in to the Quest system for this class.  After the 12th day of class, when you log into Quest you will be asked to pay via credit card on a secure payment site. You have the option to wait up to 30 days to pay while still continuing to use Quest for your assignments. If you are taking more than one course using Quest, you will not be charged more than $50/semester. Quest provides mandatory instructional material for this course, just as does your textbook, etc.  For payment questions, email quest.fees@cns.utexas.edu.

8.  This course carries the Quantitative Reasoning flag. Quantitative Reasoning courses are designed to equip you with skills that are necessary for understanding the types of quantitative arguments you will regularly encounter in your adult and professional life. You should therefore expect a substantial portion of your grade to come from your use of quantitative skills to analyze real-world problems.

Lecture Schedule:  Instructors may modify schedule slightly throughout the semester, usually by going somewhat faster, never slower.

TTh classes cover the same material as the MWF classses over each week.
