About Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day

The University of Texas Department of Mathematics will host a Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day on April 20th, 2013. This is an event which will include math talks, hands-on activities, and informative panels for high school female students. The purpose of the day is to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics.

Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day is free. It's a fun and informative environment. Refreshments will be provided!

Date and Location

The event will be held on the University of Texas campus, on April 20th, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The activities will be held in ACES 2.402 and ACES 2.444 on the University of Texas campus.

Am I eligible?

Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day is for young women high school students in the 12th grade, 11th grade, and 10th grade. There are only a limited number of spots available. If there is room available, we may accept 9th graders or younger students, but preference will be given to the high schoolers that are closest to graduation. This event is for young women only, and it will be free for all participating students.

Program

Keynote Address

Our keynote address will be given by Dr. Mariel Vazquez, Associate Professor of Mathematics at San Francisco State University. Dr. Vazquez was recently profiled in an article in the Hispanic Outlook In Higher Education, entitled "A Scientific Star Blossoms at San Francisco State University." She was also one of the few selected recipients of the prestigious President's Early Career Award. Read all about Dr. Vazquez below!

Directions

Location on campus. The Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day events will be held in the Applied Computational Engineering and Sciences building (ACES), in rooms 2.402 and 2.444. Here is an overview of the building's location on campus:

Parking on campus. Parking is limited on the University of Texas campus. There is an interactive parking map available here:

One of the closest parking garages (for a fee) is the San Jacinto Garage (SJC).

Bus routes. The University of Texas is accessible by many bus routes, both University lines and city lines. The easiest way to find the closest bus route from your house is to use Google Maps. Enter your address, the ACES Building, and select the bus icon. Alternatively, Capital Metro has a bus-route finder. Enter the location as "24th Street & Speedway, Austin TX."

Participation in the Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day is free for everyone. We do request that potential participants register by April 15, 2013.
