Junior Topology: Incompressible surfaces in handlebodies by Joao Nogueira in RLM 12.166
In his book, Lectures on three-manifold topology, Jaco proves that a handlebody of genus 2, H, contains an embedded non-separating incompressible surface of arbitrarily high genus. Then, he raises the question if it is possible to have a separating, instead of non-separating, incompressible surface in H of arbitrarily high genus. In 2000 Qiu published an affirmative answer to this question. We will present both Jaco and Qiu constructions included on a wider discussion on incompressible surfaces in handlebodies. Submitted by
