Topology Seminar: Knotty algebraic curves and exotic 4-manifolds by
Kyle Hayden (Columbia University)
Four-manifold topology is famous for "exotic" phenomena. However, this wild flexibility often evaporates in the presence of rigid geometry, such as complex structures. In this talk, we'll explore this phase transition using surfaces in 4-manifolds. In particular, I'll describe new types of "exotically knotted" surfaces in 4-manifolds, including smooth (in fact, holomorphic) disks in the 4-ball that are isotopic through ambient homeomorphisms but not ambient diffeomorphisms.
