Info for New Graduate Students

Congratulations to our new graduate students on the decision to come to the University of Texas at Austin.  Our graduate students represent over 21 foreign countries and over 30 of the 50 United States of America.

As soon as you arrive in Austin, come see Nancy Lamm, RLM 8.144.   I will have orientation information and paperwork for you.  The orientation packet for you will have all of the information covered in this website.  When we meet, I will take your photograph for our Graduate Student Photo Board and we can take a tour of the Department of Mathematics.

As a new graduate student, you will want to review the website of the Office of Graduate Studies for information and to take orientation online. Part of the orientation is Ethics Training which is required and can be done online.

You will be sent to the Information Technology Resource Center to get your UT EID upgraded to "high assurance".

With your UT EID, you can now use "UT DIRECT" (the hub for UT's online services) by going to to the UT Home Page and clicking on UT Direct. Help, support and training is available at Information Technology Resource Central. You will use UT Direct for many things, such as registering for classes, checking on your personal information, student information, employee information, and other services. Take a few minutes to sign on to UT Direct and review the navigation bars. Becoming familiar with UT Direct will be worth your time.

To register for classes, you can review our course schedule at http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/schedules. For information on how to register, and when to register, please go to http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/registration/.

The official University Graduate Catalog of courses is available at https://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/catalogs.

The academic calendar can be seen at www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/cals.html.

To become familiar with new words and phrases we use at UT, please go to http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/knowitall.php.

Our Graduate Advisor will be advising all new graduate students. Check Dates to Remember for the exact times. Dr. Daniel will advise Actuarial students and Dr. Powers will advise Statistics students.

Information about "how to register" and "when you can register" is available at http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/rose. You can register by telephone or online.

Be sure to make note of when you can register! Registration times are done by the first letter of your last name.  After you register, you will need to pay your tuition and fees. Be sure to notice the deadline for paying.  If you do not pay before the deadline, you will be dropped from your classes.

How to pay? Cash, check, Master Card, Discover (there is a surcharge on credit card payments), and installment payments. Visa is not accepted! If you wish to take advantage of a Tuition Loan, log on to UT Direct. Click on "My Finances", then scroll down and click on "What I Owe". Under the heading "Student Sites", click on "Tuition Loan".

All Mathematics graduate students will be given a computer account on the Math Dept Linux Network. In addition, you will be on the listserv "grad". We send emails to all Mathematics graduate students by using this "grad" alias. After you activate your math email account, be sure you are receiving messages addressed to "grad".

When the semester starts, you will be assigned a mailbox in the Mathematics Front Office, RLM 8.100. You will be given a key so that you can open your mailbox from the main hallway. You can check your mailbox before you get your key by coming into the Front Office.

It is a tradition in the Mathematics Department that new graduate students are assigned to a mentor. The mentor is usually a second year student who will be there to answer questions you have that are not covered in orientations.

Parking - as a new graduate student you are eligible for a "C" campus parking permit. If you are employed as a Teaching Assistant or Graduate Research Assistant, please read about parking for employees and the "A" employee parking permit.
