New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>The increasing availability of large network datasets is creating more demand for statistical methods adapted to these datasets. &nbsp;This talk will consist of three parts: &nbsp;First, I will introduce and discuss exponential-family random graph models (ERGMs). &nbsp;Then I will point out weaknesses of these models with regard to their scalability and describe two different modeling methods, each of which retains certain ERGM aspects while modifying others, that may be applied to large datasets such as those derived from social networks on the <span class=GramE>internet</span>. &nbsp;The first method leverages ideas from survival and event history analysis to a continuous-time <span class=GramE>regression modeling</span> framework for network event data that can incorporate both time-varying network statistics and time-varying regression coefficients. &nbsp;&nbsp;This framework can apply to both egocentric processes defined for individual nodes and relational processes defined for pairs of nodes. &nbsp;The second method describes a <span class=GramE>network clustering</span> framework, based on finite mixture models, that can be applied to discrete-valued networks with hundreds of thousands of nodes and billions of edge variables. &nbsp;We discuss various improvements relative to other recent model-based clustering work for networks, including a more flexible modeling framework, improvements to the <span class=SpellE>variational</span>-approximation estimation algorithm, implementation of standard error estimation via a parametric bootstrap approach, and application of these methods to much larger datasets than those seen elsewhere in the literature.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <h4 interest involve populations with interacting and/or interfering units. In these problems, measurements about interactions and interference (e.g., social structure and familial relations) are available, in addition to traditional measurements about unit-level outcomes and covariates. Formal statistical models for the analysis of this type of data have emerged as a major topic of interest in diverse areas of science. In this talk, I will review a few ideas and open research problems that are central to this burgeoning literature, placing emphasis on inference and other core statistical issues. Then I will turn to describe recent work on a subset of these problems, including: (1) a new notion of non-<span class=SpellE>ignorability</span> that applies to network sampling designs, (2) an inference strategy that can be used to obtain valid estimates in these settings, (3) a strategy to extend the <span class=SpellE>Neyman</span>-Rubin framework for estimating causal effects in the presence of social interference, (4) a wavelet decomposition for large&nbsp;<span class=GramE>networks&nbsp; and</span> (5) elements of a statistical formalism for network-<span class=SpellE>variate</span> random variables. For example, the popular fixed rank nomination (FRN) scheme, often used in studies of schools and businesses, allows study participants to nominate and rank at most a small number of contacts or friends, leaving the existence other relations uncertain. However, most statistical models are formulated in terms of completely observed binary networks. Statistical analyses of FRN data with such models ignore the censored and ranked nature of the data and could potentially result in misleading statistical inference. We compare parameter estimates obtained from a likelihood for complete binary networks to those from a likelihood that is derived from the FRN scheme, and show that the binary likelihood can provide misleading inference, at least for certain model parameters.
