Stephanie Nichols is a mathematics faculty member at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Cambridge, MN. She is also a doctoral candidate in Mathematics Education at the University of Texas in Austin and is expected to graduate this May. In the fall of 2002 she was enrolled in Dr. Starbird's inquiry-based Introduction to Number Theory course and the following year was both a teaching assistant to Dr. Starbird as well as a part of a research team studying the development of a sense of proof in his course. For the next three years Stephanie served as a TA to several faculty members teaching the Number Theory course using inquiry, many of whom were teaching with this method for the first time, as well as continuing the research begun in the fall of 2003. She has presented posters as well as spoken at several conferences in Math Education about this research as well as co-authored a chapter on proof at the undergraduate level. In addition, her dissertation research studied student interaction in Dr. Starbird's inquiry-based Number Theory course.
