Inside UT Math

Spring 08 Awards
Graduating Ph.D students R. Alonso, M. Czubak, A. Kahle, M. Luxton and A. Young won this years Frank Gerth III dissertation Awards. Graduating Math undergraduates A. Ahmed, N. Ehrmann, Pui Man Ho and A. Leroux have been awarded 2008 Williams Scholars. D. Radin won CNS teaching excellence award and M. Zou won CNS staff excellence award.

Pavlovic has been awarded a Sloan Fellowship
Professor Natasa Pavlovic has been awarded a 2008 Sloan Fellowship. Natasa has joined our department from Princeton in fall 2007. She received her Ph. D. from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2002. Her research areas includes PDE and Harmonic Analysis.

James Vick Receives the Nowotny Medal
Professor James W. Vick of Mathematics and Sharon H. Justice of Department of Educational Administration have been awarded the Arno Nowotny Medal. Dr. Vick and the recipients of the Presidential Citation, Civitatis Award, the President’s Associates and Chancellor’s Council Teaching Awards have been honored at the University award dinner on Jan. 23.

Community Outreach
About every fourth Saturday, high school students from across the state meet to get down with Mathematics. The Saturday Morning Math Group was begun by Mathematics Professor Karen Uhlenbeck and Dan Freed in fall 1993, and is now a popular outreach program bringing extra-curricular education to students across the state.

UTeach
The Mathematics Department participates in UTeach, the nationally recognized teacher certification program developed and run cooperatively by the College of Natural Science and College of Education. UTeach integrates actual classroom experience and quality education in mathematics and sciences.

Education In Texas
Uri UT Austin provides leadership for educators in Texas, assisting communities with primary, middle school and secondary education. Under the direction of nationally recognized Mathematics Professor Uri Treisman, the Dana Center for Education Research has led the state in reforming school curriculum.

Homogenization of the Flame Propagation in Random-Media
BETUL ORCAN (UT-AUSTIN)

We will talk about the homogenization of a reaction-diffusion equation which arises in combustion theory. The methods which are used in periodic-case are not applicable anymore, so we will see another approach in the solution of this problem. (Candidacy Talk)
