Abstract. In this paper, we construct metastable states of atoms interacting with the quantized radiation field, which emerge from the excited bound states of the non-interacting system, and we prove that these states obey a quasi-exponential time-decay law. The estimate of the error term improves a corresponding result in [BachFr hlichSigal 1998]. This yields an enlargement of the time period during which {\em Fermi's Golden Rule} can be observed. A novel feature of our approach is the dependence of the complex dilatation parameter on the perturbation parameter (coupling constant).
