    New International Students

Welcome to The University of Texas at Austin. As a new international graduate student, you will want to check in at the International Office when you arrive in Austin.

The International Office maintains an excellent reference website for new graduate students at http://www.utexas.edu/international/isss/students/new/.

There are two types of English language assessments. One is the "J BAR". If a new international student receives lower than 600 on TOEFL or low verbal GRE, you will have an English Screening at the International Office. The results are faxed to our Graduate Advisor with possible class suggestions to assist you in learning English.

The second English language assessment is for certification as a Teaching Assistant.

If you are going to be a Teaching Assistant, you can review the English Requirements (see ITA Registration Info.doc) and testing procedures at http://ita.io.utexas.edu/.

The Mathematics Department has registered you for the English Assessment test. You will need to email ita.test@tiec.org or call 477-4511 to make an appointment for the English Proficiency assessment.

The International Office maintains a Virtual Immigration Library at http://www.utexas.edu/international/cs/library.htm which is an excellent reference site for all your immigration questions.

The International Office will assist you with taxes and complying with the tax treaty between your country and the United States.

After you check in with the International Office, and meet with Nancy Lamm, you will receive more information about obtaining a Social Security Card and the Payment Request Form.
