I don't see any problem with conducting discussions about specific
technical problems on the mailing list. Other people can throw in
their $0.02 and the results are preserved in the mailing list archive.
Wrt mailing list conversations let me remark that it helps a lot to
trim quoted text to just the stuff to which one wishes to respond.
