[Maxima] a question on "%" output type

[=?big5?B?tsAguM62rw==?=]

Dear all
      I find there is a question on "%" output type
for example
(%i96) x^2+x+1;
(%o96) x^2+x+1

(%i97) eq1:%;
(%o97) x^2+x+1

(%i98) f(x):=%;
(%o98) f(x):=%

why f(x) can not assign by %.
if the "%" output type can not use in "f(x):=" that were be not a convience in programming.
