Yes, very much!

Mathematica does this and it's very useful.

Trigonometric functions are all nice candidates. exp(), log() also.  
All 'mathematical' functions of one argument basicly.

Support for user functions is a good thing also but not as needed as  
the basic functions.



The other day I was manipulating some equation and while all the  
standard (+ - * ^) operations work, trigonometric functions did not -  
it might be useful for equations also, however mapping over lists is  
of most use of course.
