Is there something "symbolic" about your problem that makes Maxima more 
suitable to use
that the typical numerical finite element PDE codes?  There have been 
some papers on
various methods by C.M. Anderson,  A. Miola, and others.

There is also a Macsyma package "PDEase" which is proprietary but you 
may be able
to find a demo or documentation.
