The purpoe of this course is to introduce students to applications of Number Theory in

Cryptography and Error- correcting codes. These two topics address the problem of

ensuring data integrity during information transmission and storage. The first deals with

the problem of protecting data against malicious attacks, and the second against

interference due to noise. Security on the internet is a hot topic and it is all based on

interesting mathematics.

Basic properties of integers, including properties of prime numbers, congruences, and

primitive roots. Introduction to finite fields and their vector spaces, with applications to

encryption systems and coding theory.
