M474M Introduction to Mathematical Modeling and Industrial Mathematics

Prerequisite and degree relevance:

Mathematics 427K and one of M311, M341, M340L, all with grades of at least C.

Course description:

This courses focuses on some problems of today’s industry. Numerical work and

mathematical analysis go hand in hand and build on each other toward a better

understanding of the problems under study. The goal is to impatr to the student the

excitement and usefulness of mathematics as a tool in solving real world problems.

Although students are assumed to know calculus of one and several variables and be

somewhat familiar with computers, this course will introduce basic material in theory and

computation of ordinary and partial differential equations, integral equations, calvculus of

variations and control theory. No background in Physics will be assumed. Specific

industrial applications are examined.
