Fall 2008, MATH 361K: Introduction to real analysis (Section 59075)

General Information

Course description:
This is a rigorous treatment of the real number system, real sequences, and limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals of real-valued functions of one real variable. The class will be based on the Inquiry Based Learning or IBL method. In most classes the professor lectures, you take notes and learn what you are told. In IBL you figure out proofs of theorems and solutions to problems on your own. You will learn how to analyze a problem and come up with a solution. In each class you and/or your classmates will present some of the problems from the homework. To practice giving presentations you should talk to your classmates, me and Elizabeth. You may not use any books, websites, or people not in this class!

Course grade: Your overall course grade will be determined by your participation (class attendance, presentations, comments in class), homework, and exam grades. The proportions will be the following:

Exams: There will be two midterms and a final exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. Please, note that there will be an oral component of your final exam that will take place outside of the scheduled exam time slot. The tentative dates for the written exams are

Midterm #1 and #2 will be held during the regular class hour.

Homework: The assignments will be posted on Blackboard. They will be collected each class meeting at the beginning of the class. Your lowest homework grade will be dropped.

Participation: Class attendance, office presentations, in class presentations, comments in class. Please, note that the office presentations will take place outside the regular class time.

Make-up policy: There will not be make-up exams, except only in very compelling circumstances or when the University requires me to do so. If circumstances beyond your control cause you to miss an exam, please discuss the matter with me as soon as possible. Failure to contact me (by person, phone or email) within 24 hours of missing an exam will eliminate the possibility of any make-up.
