DISCLAIMER: The Vice-President, Dick Cheney, pronounces his name "Chay-nee". Until he was 35 years old he pronounced it "Chee-nee", which is how my family pronounces the name. He is my eighth-cousin-once- removed. (Thus, his father was an 8th cousin to me, and Dick himself is a 9th cousin to my children.) We are both descended from a William Cheney, who emigrated from England to Roxbury, Mass. around 1635. Of course, I do NOT endorse Cousin Dick's politics.

CONTENTS OF THIS SITE: There is an anonymous FTP site for research papers and other files of (possibly) general interest. In particular, there is a file "book-sale" listing approximately 150 mathematics books for sale. If you wish to look at the books available make an arrangement with me: cheney@math.utexas.edu. My office is RLM 13.158. The list of books is here on the web as well.

There is a subdirectory ATBOOK containing files that pertain to the book "A Course in Approximation Theory" by Cheney and Light. In particular, there are errata, new references, and comments about problems.

A 16-page document that I have written gives suggestions for achieving good style in mathematical writing. The file name is "advice.pdf" and is in the ftp site mentioned above. This document collects advice from many sources. Click HERE to see it (if you are using a suitable browser), or download it for printing.

For codes and other material related to the book "Numerical Mathematics and Computing" by Dr. David Kincaid and myself, there is an anonymous ftp site.

For the more advanced book "Numerical Analysis" by Kincaid and Cheney, there is a similar source.

For my book "Analysis for Applied Mathematics", there is a similar source.

I am interested in genealogy, and have much information about my family's ancestory, including the surnames Cheney, DeWolf, Bemis, Jenks, Goddard, Ward, Thayer, Brailey, Stevens, Pratt, Wheaton..... A genealogy of my branch of the Cheney family has been written by Charles Pope. Long out of print, this book is available in a set of 24 PDF files. A zip file containing these 24 files is also available. Click here to see or download the book. POPE

I maintain a list of piano trios (piano, violin/clarinet/viola, and cello). These are either written for clarinet or can be played by clarinet using suitable transposition from the violin part. To see it, click TRIOS

The machine I usually use is called Iso.

If you want to see what the CAM program brochure has about me, including a picture, click HERE. The information there is not current: The book "Numerical Mathematics and Computing" with co-author D.R. Kincaid is now entering its 5th edition. The graduate-level textbook "A Course in Approximation Theory" with co-author W.A. Light appeared in 1999, and the graduate-level textbook "Analysis for Applied Mathematics" appeared in 2000. It is volume 208 in the Springer series "Graduate Texts in Mathematics".

If you want to see what's in that anonymous ftp site, click HERE. The INDEX file has the table of contents for the directory. Files of the form *.ps or *.pdf can be perused on-line with suitable browsers, such as Mosaic or Netscape (and they can be down-loaded for printing). Files in text form can be read with the simplest browsers such as Lynx, and can be down-loaded. If you want any file in PDF format, let me know and I can furnish it.
