M210E ~ Emerging Scholars Program Math Workshop ~ Fall 2007

Welcome to my M210E homepage. I'll be using this space to post information about the class, including the first-day handout and the problem sets used in class.

Here is the first day handout.

NEW! An opportunity for the ambitious calculus student

The Albert A. Bennett Calculus Prize Exam will take place Saturday December 8, 10 AM - 12 PM, in RLM 5.104. This is a great chance to test your calculus skills against students from other calculus classes at UT. To join the action, show up at the designated time and place with a pen/pencil and your student ID.

Of course, the calculus itself should be enough motivation to make you want to wake up at 9 AM on a Saturday. But in the highly unlikely case that it isn't, please be advised that there are fabulous cash prizes for the winners; a total of $600 will be awarded to the top three finishers. And if you still need help getting up early on a Saturday, here is a picture of Vince Young:

Fig. 0.1. This man did not become totally awesome by sleeping in on Saturday mornings.

Tutorials, notes, and other useful information

At long last: Notes from my integration tutorial! My apologies for the delay in getting these up. These may not be useful to you right now, but you may need this information when we start doing multiple integrals. The notes are given as large .jpg files (one page per link), so they may take some time to download.

All exams except Exam 1 contain solutions.

Errata

In Problem Set 3, the fourth integral on Problem 9 should have 1/e as the upper limit of integration, not e. (The problem can still be done with e as the upper limit of integration, but this introduces an extra degree of difficulty that I didn't intend to include.)

On Problem Set 18, I accidentally used the same quote that I used on Problem Set 17 (i.e. I forgot to cut/paste in a new quote). I'm not sure if that technically qualifies as an error, but good grief.

On Problem Set 21, Problem 121, please change the integrand in the second integral to "x^2 cos (xy) dy dx". On Problem 122, please change the limit of integration on the second integral from pi to the cube root of pi. Both problems are technically do-able without these changes, but the changes will make things come out a bit better.

On Practice Exam 2 Silver, the solution to problem 2(b) contains a sign error, which led to an incorrect answer. The correct answer is equal to the given answer plus 18.

On Practice Exam 2 Gold, the formula used in problem 2(b) for the scalar projection of x onto y should only have the magnitude of y in the denominator - NOT the magnitude of y squared.

Meta-Errata

In the first erratum under "Errata", "Problem 9" should read "Problem 15". My apologies for the error within an erratum.
