Prerequisite and degree relevance: The prerequisite is one of M408D, M408M or the equivalent, with a grade of at least C-, or consent of instructor. (Credit may not be received for both M341 and M340L. Majors with a 'math' advising code must register for this rather than for M340L; majors without a 'math' advising code must register for M340L. Math majors must make a grade of at least C in M341.)
Course description: This course has three purposes: an overview of elementary linear algebra, introduction to proofs and developing proof skills and finally an introduction to mathematical abstraction and provide a necessary prerequisite for a number of upper division courses.
We will try to cover the first five chapters of the text, but some of the sections and some of the material within some sections will be omitted. See below for a list of topics covered in the class.
Final Grade: Quizzes: 30%
Midterm: 30%
Final exam: 40%
Homework and Quizzes: Every week by Friday a list of homework will be posted here and on blackboard. These will not be collected. Instead there will be four quizzes on June 7, 14, 28 and on July 5. The questions on the quiz will be chosen from the set of homework provided up to then. In computing the final grade your lowest grades in the quizzes will be dropped.
Note however that there will be no makeup for the quizzes.
Midterm: There will be a midterm on Jun 21st conducted during the class. There will be no makeup midterm and you need to make sure to leave your schedule empty for that time slot.
Questions and Complains: If you need help or you have a concern about the course, you should contact the Instructor during the office hours and in rare cases when you cannot attend the office hours, you can arrange an appointment via e-mail.
If you have a question about the grading of exams or homework, you must submit a written explanation within a week of the time the grade is posted. Note that all your grades will be posted on blackboard.
You can also get help from the Learning Skills Center in Jester. They provide a variety of material to assist students.
Students with disabilities: The University of Texas at Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. For more information, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 471- 6259, 471-6441 TTY.
