Course description: M408C is our standard first-semester calculus course. It is directed at students in the natural and social sciences and at engineering students. The emphasis in this course is on problem solving, not on the presentation of theoretical considerations. While the course necessarily includes some discussion of theoretical notions, its primary objective is not the production of theorem-provers.

The syllabus for M408C includes most of the basic topics in the theory of real-valued functions of a real variable: limits, continuity, derivatives, maxima and minima, integration, area under a curve, volumes of revolution, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions and techniques of integration.

Final Grade:     Quizzes: 15%

                              Midterms: 25% each

                              Final exam: 35%

Homework and Quizzes: Every week by Thursday a list of homework will be posted on blackboard. These will not be collected and are assigned only as a recommendation that you make sure you know how to do them.

Every Wednesday during the discussion section, you will be given a quiz. The quiz consists of about 3 questions that are very similar to 3 of the problems that were assigned the previous Thursday. In computing the final grade two of your lowest grades in the quizzes will be dropped. Note however that there will be no makeup quiz.

Midterms: There will be two midterms. The first one is on Feb 10th and the second one is on Apr 2nd. Both will be conducted during the class. There will be no quizzes in those two weeks. Note again that there will be no makeup midterms and you need to make sure to leave your schedule empty for that time slot.

Questions and Complains: If you need help or you have a concern about the course, you should contact the Teaching Assistant during his office hours. You can also go to the Instructor’s office hour and in rare cases when you cannot attend the office hours, you can arrange an appointment by sending an e-mail to the Instructor or the Teaching assistant.

If you have a question about the grading of a quiz or one of the exams, you must submit a written explanation within a week of the time the grade is posted. Note that all your grades will be posted on blackboard.

You can also get help from the Learning Skills Center in Jester. They provide a variety of material to assist students.

Students with disabilities: The University of Texas at Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. For more information, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 471- 6259, 471-6441 TTY.
