Description: M408C is the standard first-year calculus course. It is directed at students in the natural and social sciences and at engineering students. The syllabus for M408C includes most of the elementary topics in the theory of real-valued functions of a real variable: limits, continuity, derivatives, maxima and minima, integration, area under a curve, volumes of revolution, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions and techniques of integration. Prerequisites: Either a 560/540 on the Mathematics Level I or IC Test or 560 on Mathematics Level II or a grade of at least C in M304E or M305G or M505G. M408C may not be counted by students with credit for Mathematics 403K, 308K, or 308L. Homework (10% of course grade) will be assigned for almost every section we cover. Homework assigned in a given week will be collected in discussion section on Tuesday of the following week. Your 3 lowest homework scores will be dropped. Late homework will not be accepted. Three midterm examinations (60% of course grade) will be held in lecture on Fridays: February 27, April 3, and May 1. If you have any conflict with these exams then let me know as soon as possible. A comprehensive final examination (30% of course grade) will be held at a time and place to be announced by the University. According to University policy, by registering for this class you agree that you will be able to attend this exam. Students who fall under the University's Learning Disability Policy must present the Dean of Student's certification of that fact to the student's instructor prior to the first test. The University of Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities.
