BS IN MATHEMATICS: MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES OPTION WITH SPECIALIZATION IN STATISTICS, PROBABILITY, AND DATA ANALYSIS

SPECIALIZATION COURSES OFFERRED FALL, 2002

CS 327E Elements of Databases: Appropriate for students who hope to combine statistics and computing. Note the prerequisites CS 303E and 313E with grades at least C.

ECO 341K Introduction to Econometrics: Mostly a course in regression. M358K or M378K will probably substitute for the prerequisite ECO 329, but be sure to check with instructor. You should take the other prerequisite, ECO 420K (or 320K) before enrolling in this.

ECO 354K (Introductory Game Theory). Although this does not appear in the list of acceptable courses in the catalogue, it has been added to that list. Prerequisite: ECO 420K

EE 366L Statistics for Manufacturing. M358K should be more than adequate to substitute for the prerequisites, but check with the instructor t to be sure. Recommended for any one interested in checking out Quality Assurance as a possible career.

GRG 360G: Geographic Information Systems. Many contemporary applications of statistics involve analysis of information from GIS’s, so this could be a helpful adjunct to your statistics courses. Permission of instructor is required.

MIS 325: Introduction to Data Management. An appropriate course for students who want to combine statistical and computer skills. Note the prerequisite of MIS 310 or equivalent. May only be open to students who have been admitted to a business major.

MSC 37H: Introduction to Management Science- Honors. This is an introduction to Operations Research with a business emphasis. Note the prerequisite of MIS 310 or equivalent. Probably restricted to students in the Business Honors program.

M 325K: Discrete Mathematics. Many students find this helpful preparation for the required courses M362K and analysis (M361 or M365C).

M 439J: Probability Models with Actuarial Applications. Intended for students in the Actuarial program, but also serves as a second course in probability. Offered in fall semester only.

M339U: Actuarial Contingent Payments I. Of interest if you are considering applying your probability and statistics skills to actuarial science or other risk analysis. Offered in fall semester only.

M346: Applied Linear Algebra. A second course in linear algebra with applications. Recommended for students who plan to do graduate work in statistics, students interested in operations research, and students interested in broadening their applied mathematics background. Currently offered only in the fall.

M348: Scientific Computation in Numerical Analysis. Recommended for students interested in the computational aspects of statistics. Usually offered only once a year. Prerequisite: CS303E or equivalent, either M341 (or M311) or M340L with grade of C or better.

M374G: Linear Regression Analysis. Consent of instructor required. Meets with the graduate course in regression. Offered only in the fall semester.

M375 (Unique Number 57095): Introduction to Stochastics. This course is not regularly offered, and thus is not listed in the catalogue as meeting this requirement. However, it can be counted by petition. The course is designed to provide a concise and elementary exposition of the theory of "Stochastic calculus", which includes the theory of martingales,

Brownian motion, stochastic integration and analysis, and some of its applications to finance. The course is designed primarily for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students interested in probability and its use in applications like economics, finance, decision analysis, actuarial mathematics and risk management. Prerequisites: Basic undergraduate courses in probability and advanced calculus. Textbook: Elementary stochastic calculus by Thomas Minkowski, which will be supplemented by handouts and problems

ME 366L: Operations Research Models. Recommended for students interested in Operations Research or Quality Assurance. Permission of instructor required.

PSY 325K: Advanced Statistics. This may be the only undergraduate course in which Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is covered. Prerequisite PSY 301 (M358K should be adequate for the statistics prerequisite, but check with the instructor). Not offered every semester.

RM 357E: Introduction to Risk Management. Appropriate for students interested in insurance careers. Students not enrolled in the College of Business Administration might have difficulty getting into this course.
