BS IN MATHEMATICS: MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES OPTION WITH SPECIALIZATION IN STATISTICS, PROBABILITY, AND DATA ANALYSIS - -

SPECIALIZATION COURSES OFFERED FALL, 2007. These are courses offered in Fall, 2007 that will count toward the additional  upper division work required for this degree.

If you are aware of other courses offered in Fall, 2007 that you think might be appropriate to count for this specialization, please email the faculty advisor. It would be helpful to include a syllabus or course announcement for the course.  

Be aware that most of the courses below have prerequisites, sometimes in other departments, and that enrollment in some courses may be limited.


CS 327E Elements of Databases:  Prerequisite: CS  307, CS313E, or EE322C with grades at least C. (CS or former CS majors may substitute CS 347.)

ECO 341K Introduction to Econometrics: Mostly a course in regression. M358K or M378K will probably substitute for the prerequisite ECO 329, but be sure to check with instructor. You should take the other prerequisite, ECO 420K (or 320K) before enrolling in ECO 341K.

ECO 354K (Introductory Game Theory).  Prerequisite: ECO 420K

EE 366L Statistics for Manufacturing. M358K should be more than adequate to substitute for the prerequisites, but check with the instructor to be sure. Recommended for any one interested in checking out Quality Assurance as a possible career. Spaces open to math majors may be restricted.

EE 379K: Data Mining (May require petition to count toward requirement)

GRG 360G: Environmental Geographic Information Systems. Many contemporary applications of statistics involve analysis of information from GIS’s, so this could be a helpful adjunct to your statistics courses. Permission of instructor is required.

GRG 360L: Spatial Analysis. Enrollment may be restricted.

M 325K: Discrete Mathematics. This is required in the 2006 - 2008 catalogue, but is a choice for a major elective in earlier catalogues. Many students find this helpful preparation for the required courses M362K and analysis (M361 or M365C). (Students who are also CS majors or who have transferred from CS may substitute CS 336 by petition.)

M 328K: Introduction to Number Theory. This is one option for a requirement in the 2006-2008 catalogue, but students in earlier catalogues may count one of M 328K or M343K as a major elective by petition. Prerequisite: M 341 with grade of C or better. 

M 339U: Actuarial Contingent Payments I. Prerequisites: M 362K with grade C or better, and credit with grade at least C or concurrent registration for ACF 329.

M 339V: Actuarial Contingent  Payments II. Prerequisite: M 339U.

M 343L: Applied Number Theory. This is an introductory course in cryptography. Prerequisite M 328K or M 343K with grade of at least C. 

M346: Applied Linear Algebra. In the 2006-2008 catalogue, this is one option for an algebra requirement, but may be counted as a major elective if not used for the algebra requirement. It may be used as a major elective by students in earlier catalogues. A second course in linear algebra with applications. Recommended for students who plan to do graduate work in statistics, students interested in operations research, and students interested in broadening their applied mathematics background. Prerequisite: M 341 or M340L with grade at least C. Has filled up quickly in recent semesters.

M348: Scientific Computation in Numerical Analysis. Recommended for students interested in the computational aspects of statistics. Prerequisite: CS303E or equivalent, either M341 (or M311) or M340L with grade of C or better. Often fills up quickly.

M 349P: Actuarial Statistical Estimates. Prerequisite: M 339J, plus either M341 or M340L, with grade of at least C in each.
M 365D: Real Analysis II (M 365C is prerequisite) Recommended for students interested in graduate work in theoretical statistics.

M374G: Linear Regression Analysis. Regression is one of the basic topics in statistics that is used in many fields. Consent of instructor required. Prerequisites: M 362K plus either M358K or M 378K (Both recommended. Grades in these course will be a deciding factor in whether or not the instructor gives permission to enroll.). Meets with the graduate course in regression, but has different assignments. Offered only in the fall semester.

M 375T: Mathematical Modeling in Biology

ME 366L: Operations Research Models. Recommended for students interested in exploring the field of Operations Research as a possible career. Consent of instructor required. 

PSY 325K: Advanced Statistics. Prerequisite PSY 301 (M358K should be adequate for the statistics prerequisite, but check with the instructor). Enrollment of non-psychology majors is usually restricted.

RM 357E: Introduction to Risk Management. Appropriate for students interested in insurance careers. Enrollment of students not enrolled in the College of Business Administration may be restricted.
