Math 408N, Spring 2012

My office is RLM 10.110, and my office hours are:
Monday, 4:00 to 5:30 and Thursday, 2:00 to 3:30.

Rory Rother (our TA) is in office RLM 12.132, and his office hours are:
Tuesday, 2:00 to 3:00, and Wednesday, 3:00 to 5:00.

If you can't make any of those office hours, and want to make an appointment, you should send us e-mail and set it up! My e-mail is olenab(at)math.utexas.edu, and Rory's is rrother(at)math.utexas.edu.

The first day handout is here.
The written homework is here. The Quest homework is (unsurprisingly) on Quest.
The (approximate) calendar is here. I will attempt to occasionally update this calendar if we deviate from it.

The solutions to the in-class work will be posted here.
The solutions to the quizzes will be posted here. (Yes, there are solutions to all these questions available above, but I thought extra spiffy ones might be nice.)

Midterm 1:

The first midterm is on Friday, February 17th in class. It will be 50 minutes, and it will be all short answer questions - it will not contain multiple choice.

Here is a sheet of concepts to review.

Here is the practice midterm. Solutions to the practice midterm.

Extra office hours: Thursday, 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm (conveniently right after my 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm office hour!)

Approximate Letter Grades (also known as the curve):

Disclaimer: these grades are just to give you an approximate idea of how you did on the test. What will actually be curved is the final grade, which is calculated using all three exams, the homework, and the quizzes. Furthermore, the final grades will use the +/- option, while here I'm just giving you the ranges without that. That being said:

A: 82% or higher.
B: 67% - 81%.
C: 51% - 66%.
D: 39% - 50%.
F: 38% or lower.

Here are the solutions to all the midterm quetions except the bonus. Bonus solution coming soon.

Midterm 2:

The second midterm is on Friday, March 30th in class. It will be 50 minutes, and it will be the same format as the first test - all short answers. You will need to show your work!

Here is a sheet of concepts to review.

Here is the practice midterm! Solutions to the practice midterm.

Extra office hours: Thursday, March 29th, 3:30pm to 4:30 pm. (Immediately after my normal office hours.)

Approximate Letter Grades: (the curve)

These are calculated on the basis of the average of your two exam scores. The same disclaimers/caveats as the ones above before the first midterm curve apply.

A: 83% or higher.
B: 69% - 82.5%.
C: 52% - 68.5%.
D: 42% - 51.5%.
F: 41.5% or lower.

Here are the long-awaited solutions to midterm 2!

Final Exam:

The exam is on Friday, May 11, from 9 am to 12 pm in BEL 328.

Here's the practice final. It's on the long side, but should be useful in preparing. Here are some partial solutions -- more coming soon!

Here are the concepts to review. Let me know if you see anything missing!
