Computer TA homepage
This page is set up to provide some quick links to department resources and
to explain a bit about my job. It will be updated fairly regularly as I have
more stuff to put in here, so keep looking.
The Job
The job seems to be divided into four unequal parts:
- User support
-
This can mean anything you want it to. I hold office hours in the small
computer lab, RLM 8.118, MWF 10am - 12 noon; anyone can ask me questions,
get help and so on. I answer
gripe email when appropriate. I install new software, and update old
software as required, usually as requested by users.
- Seminars
-
I give regular seminars on different aspects of using the math department
computer system. These are every week or two weeks. The notes are
available as hard copy and on the web in the
documentation
tree in four
different formats. See below for a list of recent seminars.
- Documentation
-
One of my tasks is to improve the documentation of the computer system.
This is a very poorly specified job, partly because there is so much of
it to do. Any suggestions are welcome (please
email me if you have any).
My first plan is to expand the FAQ which was started in the Spring. This
is meant to be a list of the most popular questions we get asked.
Hopefully it will soon be the first place people look when they have a
question. If you think there is some program which badly needs
documentation please let me know.
- Webmaster
-
I am the main person responsible for maintaining the departments web
pages; I receive all mail sent to the webmaster. If you have any
questions about the web pages, please contact
www@math.utexas.edu; this can
mean anything from, "please set me up with a directory and links for my
web pages," to, "how do I write a web page, anyway." I hope to give a
seminar later on in the semester about writing HTML documents.
Seminars
Under construction, to be continued ...
