"Roots and Symmetries"
featuring Hendrik Orem

On April 21st, 2013, Hendrik Orem led students in a discussion of symmetries, especially focusing on how they relate to complex roots of polynomials. Students began by investigating the symmetries of triangles and squares, then tetrahedra and cubes. After this, students learned about representing complex numbers in the plane, and practiced interpreting different operations with complex numbers visually. From here, students were ready to combine these ideas with an exploration of the structure and symmetries of the complex roots of polynomials.
