Our Himalayan Adventure

Part V: Hidden Valleys of Ladakh trek

Day 2

The second day we met a friendly French couple who were doing the Lamayuru-Alchi trek and were going our way for some distance. They were geo-physicists and made interesting conversation, teaching us to differentiate between the underlying sedimentary rock which was raised from deep in the crust by the collision of the two plates ("... and zen ze lands crashed into one anozer [one hand pumping into the other] WHOOSH!"), and the rubble-like glacial moraine covering it in places. They also discussed their own research into the reversal of the earth's magnetic field polarity.

Inspired by the Wanlah girls, we tried to make our trek more interesting and less painful by singing (never mind unmusically) as we walked. But there wasn't a single song that we knew from start to end, and if we managed two verses with the chorus we considered the song a success; these included Sounds of Silence, Sweet Child of Mine (with an Axl Rose impersonation by David), and Careless Whisper. After six hours of walking, we camped above Hinju village.
