Extra Credit Assignment
In order to boost your quiz grade, I have created an "extra credit assignment". You can earn a maximum of 20 points to be applied to your total quiz grade, but you cannot use this assignment to boost your score over 100%. (However, with the bonus points earned for demonstrating problems on the chalkboard, you may get over 100%.) You cannot apply it to your total course grade, so if your quizzes are good, you don't need to do it.
The conditions are as follows.
- The work is to be written and handed in by the last class day, Dec. 6, to me. You may give it to me in class or at my office.
- You may collaborate, but solutions are to be written up individually.
- Each problem is worth a maximum of four points, and you may do up to five. If you hand in more than five problems, I will only look at the first five (not the best five).
- The problems are more difficult than quiz problems. Some of them may involve a little research - reading parts of the book you may not have paid attention to before, looking at examples, learning theorems we haven't used. Extra marks should require extra effort.
- Solutions must be neatly and carefully written. Statements must follow logically and be fully justified. Theorems and formulas used must be explicitly stated. Grading will be rigorous; however, after I return the graded work, you may correct it and hand it in a second time. Therefore it is to your advantage to hand it in early.
Here are the problems to choose from (remember, only choose up to five):
- 14.2: 39,41,48
- 14.6: 26
- 15.1: 45
- 15.2: 43
- 15.3: 45, 57
- 15.4: 29,36
- 15.6: 21, 23 (for 23, find the minimum in terms of the sides of the triangle)
- 16.3: 59
