A note about TERMINOLOGY:

The symbol ∂z/∂x will be read aloud as "Partial dz dx", that is, as "Partial dee-zee dee-ex".

Similarly, The symbol ∂z/∂y will be read aloud as "Partial dz dy".

Also, the symbols ∂²z/∂x², ∂²z/∂x∂y, ∂²z/∂y∂x, and ∂²z/∂y²

will be read aloud as, respectively,

"Partial d-squared z dx-squared", "Partial d-squared z dx dy",

"Partial d-squared z dy dx", and "Partial d-squared z dy-squared".
