Leon Liu, RLM 10.176: Effective Field Theory and Perturbative Renormalization

The talk is about Costello's approach to effective field theory and renormalization. We will discuss the definition of a quantum field theory as a compatible system of effective interactions, one for which length (energy) scale, satisfying the renormalization group equation and a notion of locality. We will also see how, given a renormalization scheme, how to relate our definition of QFT above with one based on a local action of infinite energy scale by counterterm renormalization. If time permit, we will discuss how renormalizibility work in this Wilsonian effective field theory point of view and show the renormalizability of scalar \phi^4 theory in four dimension.
