Leon Liu, Zoom: EM Duality and Magnetic Monopoles
Monday, September 21, 2020, 12:00pm - 01:00pm
(as Charlie told us last week) pure electromagenetism is symmetric under swapping electric and magnetic fields. However, once we have (electrically) charged matter, this symmetry is broken as maxwell equations prohibits singly magnetically charged matter, called monopoles. However, there's a loophole, and magnetic monopoles are allowed. I will discuss two kinds: Dirac and 't hooft polyakov monopoles. Then describe how to have EM-duality with the presence of matter. If time is allowed, I will also talk about the non abelian version.
