A relative field theory (or twisted field theory) can be thought of as encoding boundary conditions for a quantum field theory. As such this concept aims to provide a framework in which to view many interesting boundary/bulk pairings such as WZW model/Cherns-Simons theory and lattice models/finite gauge theory. We will review the key details behind the concepts of boundary field theories and relative field theories in the topological setting. We will motivate their importance via some simple applications to representation theory.
