Joe Chen, Zoom: The mapping class group of the plane minus a Cantor set
Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 02:00pm - 03:00pm
The plane minus a Cantor set is a surface of infinite type that frequently arises in complex dynamics. Its mapping class group G has a faithful action on the circle (of rays coming out of infinity). In this talk, we'll discuss some basic structure of this big mapping class group revealed in my joint work with Danny Calegari. For instance, we'll answer some of the following questions: Which (circularly orderable) groups appear as subgroups of G? What are some (normal) generating sets? Does G act on the circle in an essentially different way?
