Francesco Fournier-Facio, Zoom: New values in the spectra of stable commutator length and simplicial volume
Monday, January 31, 2022, 02:00pm - 03:00pm
Stable commutator length is an invariant of groups that reveals surprising connections between algebraic, geometric and analytic aspects of the group. It is also related to simplicial volume, a homotopy invariant of manifolds that contains a lot of geometric information. The study of these two invariants is very well-developed, and while plenty of estimates are available, precise values are almost always hard to obtain. I will present joint work with Yash Lodha in which we identify the first algebraic irrational values in these the spectra of these two invariants, answering a question of Calegari.
