Luis Torres, PMA 12.166: Ends and splittings of groups
Wednesday, May 04, 2022, 02:00pm - 03:00pm
Stallings theorem on groups with more than one end states that a finitely generated group has more than one end if and only if it splits over a finite subgroup as a nontrivial free product with amalgamation or an HNN extension. In this talk, we'll discuss ends of groups and how Stallings theorem works. If we have enough time, we'll discuss a similar statement about splittings over infinite cyclic subgroups which implies that closed hyperbolic 3-manifold groups do not split over an infinite cyclic subgroup.
