We define reductive groups (over an algebraically closed field) and introduce their classification by root data. We discuss similarities to the theory of Lie groups/algebras and define the Langlands dual group. Time permitting, we will discuss how the theory can be extended to non-algebraically closed fields and even to arbitrary group schemes.
