M360M: MATHEMATICS AS PROBLEM SOLVING

Unique number: 58785

Time and Place: TTH 2 - 3:30 p.m., RLM 5.114.

Intended Audience: Well qualified students interested in teaching mathematics at the secondary, middle school, elementary, or two-year college level.

Degree and Certification Program Relevance:
•    Students pursuing the BA or BS in math and working for secondary mathematics certification may count this course toward the “M326K or M360M” requirement.
•    Students pursuing the BS teaching option (whether seeking middle grades or secondary certification) may count this course toward the degree requirement “Enough of the following coursework to provide a total of at least thirty-two semester hours “ (but, of course, the course can’t count for both this and the above requirement.)
•    Students pursuing secondary math certification as second field or as a post-baccalaureate student and who have a strong math background may, with permission of the math teaching faculty advisor, count this course in place of M 326K.
•    Students seeking elementary certification with a math minor may count this course toward the math minor.

Prerequisites: M408C and D (or equivalent, such as M 408K, L, and M) with grades of B or better (or evidence of strong mathematics achievement past calculus), interest in teaching mathematics at the secondary or elementary level, and permission of instructor.

Course Description: Individual and group problem solving, along with readings from the process strands of the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, plus discussion of problem solving heuristics and strategies, and of methods of evaluating problem solving. Reasoning, communicating mathematics, mathematical representations, and connections between various mathematical topics will be emphasized.
