WHAT ARE THE MATH MAJOR DEGREE OPTIONS?

There are two BA degree options and five BS degree options.

What's the difference between a BA and a BS?

The BA math degree options are:

    Standard option

Mathematics for Middle Grades and Secondary School Teaching Option. Almost all students choosing this option also enroll in the UTeach program, which provides the non-mathematics courses (including student teaching) preparing students to teach math or science. (Students completing both this degree option and the UTeach program still need to apply and be accepted for teacher certification.)

The BS math degree options are:

Option I: Actuarial Science. This option is intended to help prepare students for the Actuarial Profession (the profession involved with the mathematical end of insurance.)

Option II: Applied Mathematics. This option is aimed at students planning to attend graduate school in applied mathematics.

Option III: Mathematical Sciences. This option has two specializations:

Specialization in Statistics, Probability, and Data Analysis. This specialization is intended to help prepare students for careers (in government, industry, and business) involving statistics and probability, and for graduate school in professions (such as Public Health, Public Policy, Law, Educational Testing and Measurement, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Operations Research, as well as Statistics) where a background in probability and statistics is helpful.

Specialization in Scientific Computing. This specialization prepares students for careers as programmers or systems analysts in jobs where the programming involves mathematical techniques.

Option IV: Pure Mathematics. This option is intended to prepare students for graduate school in pure mathematics.

Option V: Teaching. This option is intended to prepare students for teaching mathematics in middle grades or secondary school. It includes the requirements of the UTeach program, which provides non-mathematics courses (including student teaching) preparing students to teach math or science. (Students completing this degree program still need to apply and be accepted for teacher certification.)
