You may have heard of sampling without replacement or with replacement, but what happens if every time you pick a ball at random you replace it with c balls of the same color? This is Pólya's urn, and in this week's talk we will discuss what happens in each of these cases. We will begin with an hour of probability related riddles to warm up before diving into this problem. |

For a square, the perimeter is 4 times the side length. For a circle, the perimeter is 2pi times the radius. What do you think the shape with the greatest area is, assuming that the perimeter of the shape is 1? This is a question that people have been thinking about for thousands of years. In this talk, we will answer this question, and talk about why it was so hard to answer! |
