SMMG – February 2019Date: February 10, 2019
Time: 12pm-2pm Location: RLM 5.104 Speaker: Cas Monroe Title: Spot It! Abstract: Spot It is a simple card game with really interesting connections to deep mathematics. After going over how the game works (and playing a few times!) we will answer the question: How can we be sure any pair of cards has EXACTLY one thing in common? We will also discuss the connections to math fields like combinatorics, projective geometry, and finite fields! |

SMMG – February 2019Date: February 24, 2019
Time: 12pm-2pm Location: RLM 5.104 Speaker: Rok Gregoric Title: Higher Dimension Abstract: These days, everybody knows that we live in a 4-dimensional universe, with 3 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time. But what does the notion of "dimension" really mean? Come to this meeting of SMMG to find out!! We will talk about the limitations of one-dimensional world-views, about what mathematicians mean when we talk about "n-dimensional space for any n", and why tying your shoelaces would be a very difficult task if you lived in a universe with four spacial dimensions! |

SMMG – March 2019Date: March 10, 2019
Time: 12pm-2pm Location: RLM 5.104 Speaker: Sebastian Schulz Title: Attack of the Clones Abstract: We will be looking into a fun little mathematical game called "Escape of the Clones": Given a few pieces (Clones) on an infinite chess board that are allowed to "move" only in a certain way, is it possible for them to leave a certain section of the board (the "prison"). In a hands-on way this game will illustrate many advanced mathematical concepts, such as infinite series and invariants, that I am planning to give a hint of. |

SMMG – March 2019Date: March 24, 2019
Time: 12pm-2pm Location: RLM 5.104 Speaker: Tom Gannon Title: The Math Questions Nobody Knows The Answer To Abstract: A lot of times it can seem like all of math is solved. In reality, there is a lot more math that we don't know than there is math we know. In this talk, I'll give a bunch of examples of math questions that we don't know the answer to, and talk about why we care about them. It's going to be awesome. |

SMMG – April 2019Date: April 7, 2019
Time: 12pm-2pm Location: RLM 5.104 Speaker: Yijing Wu Title: Probability Day! Abstract: It's probability day! We'll talk about a cool fact that probability tells us about people's birthdays, a math problem that even math professors from MIT got wrong, and other cool applications of one of the coolest subjects in math, probability! |
|
SMMG – April 2019Date: Saturday April 20, 2019
Time: 12pm-2pm Location: RLM 5.104 Speaker: Hannah Turner Title: The Koch Snowflake Abstract: We're going to be talking about why we know (with 100% certainty) that this shape has infinitely long perimeter, even though it only has a finite amount of area. This will lead to a really cool concept called infinite sums and will introduce the notion of fractals! |
