Outreach Goals

An important objective of the SAGE model is to encourage undergraduate students to go on to further studies in mathematics and mathematically intensive disciplines, at all levels. By means of visits to local regional colleges, addresses to their math clubs, and consultation with their faculty, local undergraduate students are invited to participate in SAGE. They may observe the preparatory graduate seminars and/or the research workshops themselves. Most importantly, they are encouraged to attend a special outreach session held in conjunction with each workshop. The first such session will be on Monday, May 7, 2007. (See schedule above.)

The special sessions will be designed in consultation with faculty from the regional colleges. Each session will give students opportunities to interact with visiting and local researchers. Participating graduate students will give elementary expository talks about their research interests. These presentations will aim to introduce the undergraduate students to current mathematical research interests in an accessible manner and to motivate them to further study in mathematics. Time will be set aside for panel discussions with graduate students and/or workshop participants. These discussions will provide an opportunity for interaction between the visiting experts, members of the regional mathematics community, and their students.
