Biography
Charles Radin earned his BS in Physics from City College of New York in 1965, followed by a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Rochester in 1970, under the guidance of Gérard Emch. Before arriving in Austin in 1976 he held positions as: Postdoctoral Fellow (with E. Verboven) for 1970-71 in Physics at University of Nijmegen; Research Associate (with A. S. Wightman) for 1971-73, in Physics at Princeton University; Research Associate (with M. Kac) for 1973-74, in Mathematics at Rockefeller University; Instructor (research group of R.V. Kadison) for 1974-76, in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania
Research
His long term interest has focused on the emergence of phases and phase transitions in many-component systems, exemplified by the fluid and solid states of matter in thermal equilibrium. His current emphasis is on nontraditional settings such as random networks and soft matter physics. Representative examples of his work includes "The pinwheel tilings of the plane" in Annals of Mathematics, "Typical large graphs with given edge and triangle densities" in Probabability Theory and Related Fields, and "Nucleation in sheared granular matter" in Physical Review Letters.
