Frequently Asked Questions

I have another edition of the textbook. Is that alright?

We don't know.

There are dozens of editions of this book (including international and special editions.) It is impossible for your instructor to know what the differences are for each edition. If you choose to use a different edition of the text, you do so at your own risk. It is strongly suggested that you use the edition listed on your first day handout.

I added this class late and missed the first one/two/three Homeworks. Can you accept them late?

No.

We do not accept late Homework for any reason. Your three lowest Homework scores are dropped for just such eventualities.

I completed the first one/two/three Homeworks in a different section of M408K or M408L. Now that I have changed sections, those scores are zeros. Can you recover those scores and put them in my new section?

No.

Since you added the course late, those Homeworks were not finished by the due date in your current course. Therefore they are late, and will be zeros (see above.)

Will there be a curve?

We don't know. We won't know until after the Final Exam has been graded.

Was there a curve last semester?

Every semester the curve is different. Sometimes it's a few points, sometimes there is no curve. It is best to just assume there will be no curve and try your best.

What do I have to make on the final to get an A/B/C in the course?

We don't know.

Since we don't know if there will be a curve, or if there is a curve what the curve will be, we don't know what you need on the final to get a certain grade in the course. Also, the more time you spend trying to compute this imaginary score, the less time you spend preparing for the Exam.

I am going to miss a day of class. What should I do?

Get the notes from someone in class. You can also see what the instructor is going to do that day by looking at the lecture schedule. Attendance is not taken, so you do not need to alert the instructor or TA if you are going to miss a day.

I sent a math question to my instructor and I didn't get a reponse. Why?

Because it's impossible to write math over e-mail.

Will we be tested over HW01?

It's possible, but unlikely. Any prerequisite material such as that listed in HW01 will show up in so many other Homework problems that we probably won't explicitly ask you questions from HW01.

Can we use calculators on the Exams?

No.

Can we use calculators on the Homeworks?

Yes.

This Homework problem is impossible to do without a calculator. What should I do if it's on the Exam?

If a Homework problem really is impossible to do without a calculator, it won't be on the Exam.

Do we have to bring our textbooks to class everyday?

No.

I have class all the way over in Sanchez before your class. Can I come in a few minutes late?

Yes, just be courteous to your classmates and be as quiet as possible when you come in.

I have a doctor's appointment after class today. Can I leave a few minutes early?

Yes, just be courteous to your classmates and be as quiet as possible when you leave.
