Casandra Monroe, PMA 12.166/Zoom: Mostow and Margulis: A Talk on Rigidity
Wednesday, September 29, 2021, 02:00pm - 03:00pm
You might often hear people around this department (and in this seminar especially) talk about geometry by way of group theory. More than a local movement, this is a philosophy born out of Felix Klein's Erlangen program. In this talk, we'll go over some hyperbolic geometry and related things that are likely to come up in this seminar, and also talk about a major result in the area: Mostow Rigidity. But instead of going over a more geometric proof, (time permitting) we'll take a more group-theoretic approach by looking at the Margulis Superrigidity Theorem.
