Chern-Weil theory is, in my opinion, one of the all-time great mathematical theories. It unites the hard differential geometry concepts of connections and curvature with the soft algebraic topological idea of a characteristic class. The prerequisites are a familiarity with smooth manifolds, vector bundles, and de Rham cohomology.
