Proving two objects are "same" or "equivalent" (with respect to any notion of equivalence) is generally a taller order than proving they are not. A ubiquitous strategy for proving two objects are different is to cook up an invariant that "captures the difference". In this talk we will introduce the Grothendieck Ring of Varieties and see how the equivalence of two varieties in the Grothendieck ring guarantees equality of many of the known invariants (for example topological Euler Characteristic, Hodge-Deligne polynomial and even point counting functions!). Time permitting we will show that this ring is not a domain.
